Advice from the Council of Chief Medical Officers of Health

Chief medical officers of health have the responsibility within their jurisdiction (federal, provincial or territorial) for the protection and promotion of the:

• health of the public
• prevention of disease and injury

The Council of Chief Medical Officers of Health (CCMOH) provides a pan-Canadian forum for:

• collaboration
• timely sharing of public health evidence and dialogue on public health topics of mutual interest
• enabling evidence-based public health policy and practice to be advanced across Canada

The CCMOH is a collective, and one way that it shares advice and promotes public health perspectives and evidence is through their joint position statements. These statements serve as a key public communication vehicle and a catalyst for change.

The CCMOH includes:

• the chief medical officer of health from each provincial and territorial jurisdiction
• Canada's chief public health officer
• the chief medical advisor of Health Canada
• the chief medical officer of public health of Indigenous Services Canada
• the chief medical officer from the British Columbia First Nations Health Authority
• ex-officio members from other federal government departments
